Practicum Overview

BMGT190H : Introduction to Design and Quality

Throughout the Spring 2021 semester, I took the BMGT190H introductory course on Design and Quality which served as my practicum for Public Leadership, as well as the introduction course to the QUEST curriculum. QUEST is an honors program focused on multi-disciplinary teams learning through hands on experience.

In each QUEST course, the students are paired with a team consisting of some combination of other Business, Computer Science, Math, Natural Science, or Engineering students. This semester, I was paired with two Computer Science students, one Business student, and one Bioengineering student. Over the course of the semester I worked with this team on two projects. The first project was a product we designed called CuttingBoard which focused on aiding young, single-living, customers who desired to eat healthier, but felt they did not have the capabilities to do so. The second project was working as consultants with representatives of Maryland's Small Business Development Center in order to centralize their current training process.

BMGT190H offered me valuable experience and resources on my continued career path. Throughout the course, I learned various different design and process based tools that I could utilize in future presentations and projects. (We actually covered the Six Thinking Hats that we covered in PL, see                               ) Additionally, I gained valuable experience working with multi-disciplinary teams, consulting These benefits, are highly applicable to both, my current career path and my growth as a leader through the Scholars Public Leadership program.

The overall BMGT190H course connects with my growth as a leader in two main ways. Firstly, I continue learning about empathy, emotional intelligence, and other leadership oriented skills. Secondly, I gained team experience in a work environment. Throughout such a lengthy time with the group I had to rotate between being a leader, or following, depending on the circumstance. This is something I have been consistently learning about in PL, and was extremely useful to actually implement as it aided me in my continued growth as a leader.
